The “cause” is variation relative to the underlying efficacy during phase-2 combined with selective attrition as programs advance from phase-2 to phase-3.

I must not be reading English. I have no idea what that says. What are the elements involved in "selective attrition"? I have a program that can generate better obfuscated sentences than that.
