A PREGNANT woman who has been shooting for only a year emerged victorious in the third charity shoot at Cheverton Farm on Sunday.
Michelle Knowles came out top in the ladies’ section with a score of 64 out of 100.
“Mind you, I’ve been taught well because my partner is Adam Walsh, who won a silver medal at the last Island Games in Shetland,” said Michelle, from Newport.
Unfortunately for Walsh, he was upstaged by Michelle as the medallist could not feature on the winners’ podium. The competition attracted 110 competitors with more than £3,200 raised for two charities.
A cheque for £1,800 was presented to Island MP Andrew Turner on behalf of the orthopaedic ward at Newport's St Mary’s Hospital while the remainder was given to the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation.
“It was another successful day,” said Gary Hillman who, along with his wife Sue, organised the event. “This is the third year we have staged the shoot and numbers seem to go up each time.”
At Bisley, in the Phoenix 2007 tenth anniversary National Shooting Championships, IW marksman John Penn, from Shanklin, in the long-range pistol events, shooting at 400, 500 and 600 yards, won the gold medal with a score of 140 — with ten bulls — out of a possible 150.
Penn also took the bronze with a score of 96 — with eight bulls — out of a possible 100 at 200 and 300 yards.
In recent years, Penn has won many international and national championships, holding four world records in long-range pistol shooting.
Over the past five years he has attended the Phoenix but winning has always eluded him.
