Meanwhile, a "senior administration official" has confirmed to the Washington Post that two "top White House officials" were responsible for the leak, that they called at least six journalists other than Novak, and that the motive was "purely and simply revenge."

"The best outcome the Bush team is going to wind up with is that the country will believe that a couple of senior people did something unforgiveably stupid and damaging to the national security as part of a PR campaign to discredit a critic, then some even more senior people did something unspeakably vulgar in exploiting that act of stupidity for further PR advantage, and that the whole White House then just pretended nothing had happened for eleven weeks until the Justice Department was ready to start a criminal investigation.

If that's the best case, you can imagine the worst."
