Abstract: Oligonucleotide primers and probes for detecting Ancestry informative marker (AIMs) polynucleotides that contain a single nucleotide polymorphism or that contain an insertion or deletion, are provided, as are methods of using the oligonucleotide primers and probes to draw an inference as to a trait of an individual. The trait can be, for example, biogeographical ancestry, a pigmentation trait, responsiveness to a drug, or susceptibility to a disease. Also provided are methods of determining the proportional ancestry of an individual. Reagents and kits also are provided.

"Gene sequences are highly polymorphic in the population, which means thatthey come in various forms or 'flavors,'" stated DNAPrint Genomics Founderand Chief Scientific Officer Tony N. Frudakis. "Polymorphism is usually measured at the level of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) but our technology measures at the level of the haplotype (strings of SNPs), which provides researchers considerably more information. The methods covered in the patent allow for an efficient and powerful means for identifying haplotype."

"This patent cuts across a wide audience of developers from drug companiesto people working on technology in the forensics and consumer areas,"stated DNAPrint President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Gabriel. "Weplan to vigorously utilize and practice our patents and we will bereviewing the fields of genetic testing, drug development, forensicsciences and consumer products with our patent counsel to determine potential areas of development. We want to ensure that we extract thegreatest economic value out of this patent for our shareholders and investors."

Since the deletion frequency shows drastic differences among the HapMap populations, the absence of a suitable single marker tag is likely a consequence of a bias in the ascertainment of SNPs typed in the HapMap panel.
