No failure in generalship with this Colonel gentleman .. excerpt, 15mm from bottom ..
"Labor’s national executive has acted quickly on the authority it received from the national conference to preselect candidates for 25 New South Wales seats, nominating military lawyer Colonel Mike Kelly to run against Liberal member Gary Nairn in Eden-Monaro. In his role with the coalition provisional authority after the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Kelly is credited with efforts to blow the whistle on mistreatment of prisoners in Abu Ghraib and AWB’s payment of kickbacks to Saddam Hussein’s regime. David Humphries and Andrew Clennell of the Sydney Morning Herald assess the state of play elsewhere as follows: ... end excerpt
General Mike Kelly, 20 years Afghanistan, Bosnia, E. Timor, Somalia; 2003-4 arguably the top Australian in the Coalition of the Wantobees and involved in root basic strategic planning for the invasion of Iraq, retired last week and has just slammed the Iraq effort on national tv.
Notes:
Kelly said .. did feel at the time that getting rid of SH was a good thing, but ..
said invasion and aftermath U.S. leadership incompetent
lack of post war us planning and Australian compliance
frustration and sadness of avoidable casualty .. suffering and cost ,, knew much could have been avoided .. invasion comparable to puring kerosene on the problem
actually made the international security situation worse worse
Bremer, interviewed, qualified his position by saying he had no preference for either political party in Australia, .. HA .. then gave a gave a ringing endorsement of Kelly
was set up for failure .. strategic plan was set up to preserve basic infrastructure etc and Rumsfeld (he didn't say mister) overruled the whole concept. They did not accept the military planning.
de-baathification was a most tragic mistake with ]100000s unemployed and angry. We knew at the time[/b and i almost got caught in a mob in my car, until I fired a warning shot.
bremer, interviewed again threw the blame on the Iraqis who were given the responsibility for implementation of the program. He said that the concept was a good one.
after initial phase shutters went down in Canberra .. we were a bad partner .. i got a late night telephone from General Cosgrove who told me that i should make it very clear that Australia had no interest at all in discussing post invasion things. Cosgrove has denied that he told Kelly.
I WONDER IF BUSH TOLD HOWARD TO STAY OUT OF IT?
re the AWA wheat scandal:
i was sickened by the knowledge that we paid $300000 million into a war chest our soldiers our soldiers were fighting against. At another time it might be called treason. I warned Canberra many times and received no reply
POTENTIALLY MOST DAMAGING TO HOWARD ..
I WARNED CANBERRA MANY TIMES OF CONCERNS OF TORTURE IN IRAQ ..
from June 2003 re torture concerns, in general and from sept. 2003 re concerns of Abu Ghraib specifically. i wrote many times and there was absolutely no pressure from washington or canberra. in mid 2994 Sen. Hill, forget what he was at the time, told a senate inquiry that the government did not know until jan. 2005 .. 4/.. had 5 written down.
rumsfeld verged on criminal negligence
HEY!, he could testify at Rummy's trial .. la la la
australian government complicit .. ??s to be answered
Kelly .. drafted to run against Howard in the election sept.-nov. this year
HOWARD has told party room the polls indicate they could get annihilated at the election and that he has no rabbits to pull out of the hat .. the bugger .. it was a rabbit of a stern assessment of the situation told for the benefit of the media
WE 3 Howard PM, Costello treasurer, Downer, foreign minister have been there for 11 years and that could be a disability
