it's inherently a subjective and context-sensitive case-by-case thing -- and trust me, I quite understand wanting at times to go directly at folks -- under different circumstances when others were allowed to come directly at me, been there, done that -- I pay particular attention to gratuitous sniping and to those who initiate

bottom line -- use some discretion in personally characterizing/commenting about the other, and keep return fire aimed at least mostly at (the idiocy/whatever of) what the other said/thinks/believes, as distinguished from (the idiocy/whatever of) said other

a rather fine distinction, perhaps -- or should I say a distinction capable of being finely worked -- as you've already quite skillfully demonstrated more than once on this board, it is indeed possible to get the (full) (. . .) point across without crossing that line
