kpf, it still will be a painful step to trash the Sparc-Architecture (will probably called "transition" then, but its gonna be unavoidable for SUN to survive as an independent company

I haven't seen yet any good reason why SPARC should be thrashed. IMO, It'll survive only in the high end so SUN will have SPARC - high end and Opteron - low to mid range.

1. The last results still not suggest that SPARC's erosion is accellerating tremendously and nothing points me as to why it'll not survive in the high end. (IMO, SPARC's mostly bitten from the low end by the usual suspect XEON.)
2. SUN will position Opteron against XEON and the only reason to keep XEON is to be competitive with DELL in the lowest end. However, I'd not be surprized if in 2004 the XEON line is completely thrashed due to bad market acceptance.
3. Scooter's yet to make some important annoucenemt about new architecture or processor in the beggining of next year. Probably, that'll be the SPARC replacement some time in the far future.
