PML is prevalent in patients with severely suppressed immune systems - you see it most often in HIV/AIDS groups. the cause, Polyomavirus JC (often called JC virus) is carried by a majority of people and is harmless except among those with lowered immune defenses. It's actually very unlikely to surface in an MS patient, because they have over-active immune systems. Of the Deaths attributed to Ty and PML - 2 of the three did not have MS and the third one probably did not. The 1 in 1000 ratio - as it relates to MS is probably very high. However, because the symptoms can be similar, it is quite possible that someone with PML could actually be DX'd with MS and the treatment would be totally incorrect.

For Crohns - I think it may be approved in time. I wouldn't be betting the farm on it though.
