Fifty per cent of technology suppliers to disappear by 2005

IN A MEDIA release for its "Top Trends for Asia Pacific in 2004" report, Gartner has revealed its latest pronostications for that region and for much of the IT world.
First out of the blocks is a prediction that as many as 50 percent of technology suppliers will disappear from the game board by the end of 2005. As an example they say that there are more than 2300 publicly traded software companies in the world and that this is 50% to 60% too many.
Next they say that IT assets acquired before year 2000 are reaching the end of their useful life and will be replaced. Gartner say that this will strengthen companies and make them more innovative, as well as providing good growth for the IT sector when companies invest an extra 4 or 5% on IT.
Then, not being ones to miss the writing writ large upon the wall, they say that outsourcing will continue apace and go on to predict that the number of businesses using outsourcing will increase by 30% between now and 2005. They comment also that "hundreds of thousands of workers in developed economies will be displaced, many of them currently holding high-paying, white-collar positions" but claim outsourcing will bring "Massive productivity improvements, significant increases in demand and enormous infusions of innovation".
Well that's it then. You can rest easy, unless of course you work for an IT supplier or your job is in the cross-hairs for outsourcing. µ
