All original charges against Hicks were dropped including a charge involving murder, conspiracy to or complicity in, or something, against Australians, dropped when it was found that there were no Aussies in Afghanistan at the time of the alleged offence. He pleaded guilty to a charge which was made up what, 2 months or something earlier after 5 years in prison without trial, much of that tome in solitary confinement. Elections coming up in Australia wo they finally got him out.
Hicks was not a hardened "terrorist" as so many other Afghans, Pakistanis, Yemenis etc arrested about the same time as he was; yet many of those were returned to their home countries, actually tried and found guilty and then released while Hicks was still rotting in solitary confinement at Guantanamo. At least one of those had actually personally killed Americans. The US freed people from Guantanamo who had actually killed Americans while Hicks a young guy who got carried away in his hero mission rotted in solitary.
Devine is the Ann Coulter et al of the Sydney Morning Herald. While every other country criticized the military tribunals from the beginning and went after their citizens Howard and yes, Devine were happy to just say the US "will do the right thing", are fair, just et al. Whatever they do with this Aussi is all right with us.

Hicks, yeah did go to fight for the Taliban, I note the government of a country at the time, but he was treated abominably and that is the bottom line and the reason i have put his case forward.
