RE: Joshua Bell
I saw that article too. Thought pretty much the same as yofal. People are busy - catching a train or heading to work - even the classical music fans that might have recognized the quality of the performance (if they even could hear or pick up the subtleties in a quality classical music performance under those conditions) probably could not just stop and enjoy it, even if they wanted too.
The setting has a lot to do with it. You wouldn't enjoy a finely prepared meal as much if it was served in a diner-like environment by a rude wait staff - but the food could be the same. Part of the total dining experience is the environment and the 'pampering' by a knowledgeable staff. I know that when my wife and I sit down in some good seats at Symphony Center, I can get some goose bumps just thinking about all the great performances that have been played there, the historic names - before a note is played!
But, the author does have a valid point. Often, people are swayed by a 'name' or brand (hey, this is getting to be on-topic!) that they are familiar with. Sometimes to the point that the name is more important than the actual quality or value of that product/service. So why should anyone be surprised that classical music is any different?
