bad choice of battery chemistry, along with trying to cram it into too small of a space near a heat source. they selected lithium polymer for a few reasons, it can be made in a moldable package unlike other chemistries. And it has been perceived to have a higher power-density than lithium-ion, but this has not been proven in practical applications. It's more expensive than lithium-Ion, but has proven to have a shorter life span in applications like these. IMO, they sacrificed longevity for about 1/8 inch thickness space savings, or in other words, the form factor was more important than the long-term functionality.
