On March 19, Buckeye CableSystem will begin showing Al Jazeera English, the world’s first English-language news channel headquartered in the Middle East.
The new network is vastly different from its older cousin, the controversial Arab-language Al Jazeera, which is seen largely in the Middle East. The English-language network’s coverage is broader, and it has hired journalists away from the BBC and CNN.
Al Jazeera English will be on cable channel 220 in Toledo and 229 in Sandusky and will be available to any customer with the Digital Basic Pak.
“The channel is committed to impartial, independent, and objective reporting, and we feel this is an additional and important information source to provide our viewers,” said Florence Buchanan, Buckeye vice president of sales and marketing.
Located in Doha, Qatar, with broadcast centers in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia; London; and Washington, Al Jazeera English has several news bureaus scattered around the globe. Qatar is a U.S. ally in the Middle East.
In addition to a heavy schedule of news, the channel carries such programming as Witness, in-depth documentaries on everyday people in world news; Frost Over the World, with Sir David Frost interviewing some of the world’s most fascinating and powerful people; The Fabulous Picture Show, with a hostess showing viewers around inside the world film industry, and Sportsworld, described as a new take on global sports with everything from mainstream to minority games.
Block Communications Inc. is the parent company of Buckeye CableSystem and The Blade.
Buckeye executives say they have viewed the channel for some time and find it balanced and interesting, but they recognize that some viewers might not wish to view the programming, Buchanan said. She suggested customers use the parental control feature of the remote control device to block channels they don’t want their children to watch.
