It seems you are correct.

Some people have just gotten the raw end of things for so long they become old and bitter. And negative. The only thing that makes them feel better is to have others joing them...

They lose their ability to get excited about anything other than social security and they will go to the grave doubting even their own faith. A tragedy of Shakespearian proportions.

I tried to reach out but land is consumed with darkness or as sailing22 says, he's just a schemer. Either way I'm done with him. I'm sure outside of these boards he has the same nasty impact on people in his own life and does nothing to make the world a better place.
