The egocentric bullshit just keeps rolling along. Does it matter that it's not allowed? Nah. Not to Trump or his lackeys.
During the briefing at the White House, Bessent answered several questions from the press. One of the questions, from Fox News' Peter Doocy, was whether the Treasury Secretary announced the administration's plan to put President Donald Trump's face on a new $250 bill.
"How long until we see your signature next to President Trump's face on a $250 bill?" Doocy asked, prompting Bessent to note that he has two mandates as a Treasury official.
"Well, again, as treasury secretary, I have two mandates for U.S. currency," Bessent answered.
"At present, no living person can be on U.S. currency, and the currency must stay in God we trust. So right now, there is proposed legislation that in front of the House, in front of the Senate to change the first requirement so that a living person, Donald J. Trump, could be on the $250 bill," he said. "So, it's all in the hands of the, it's all up on Capitol Hill."
So at Treasury, we prepare things in advance," he added. "So we have prepared in advance that if the legislation is passed, but we will stick to the law."
The amendment also states, "no portrait or likeness of any living person shall be engraved or placed upon any of the bonds, securities, notes, or postal currency of the United States."
A proposal to add Trump's face to a $250 bill was introduced but has since stalled. The bill would commemorate the country's 250th birthday this year.
A mockup of the bill was shared by Kentucky Rep. Andy Barr in January, who posted a picture holding a giant version of the bill alongside U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach. "America is turning 250—and it’s time to make more history! Today, I met with @TreasurerBeach on my proposal to put President Donald Trump on a new $250 bill," a post featuring Barr and U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach.
"We’ve included this in a recent FI hearing in @FinancialCmte Let’s honor 250 years of American greatness by celebrating the president who put America First!" the post added. Trump's likeness on the bill came under scrutiny from former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.
"By the end of Trump’s term, it’ll be just enough to buy one gallon of gas and a carton of eggs," she wrote scathingly. Four people close to the project have confirmed that the bureau has been facing pressure from Trump officials to begin printing the bill.
It was reported that in 2025, two appointees within the Treasury Department, Brandon Beach and his senior adviser, Mike Brown, had repeatedly warned that staff should begin preparing prototypes of the bill. However, employees at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing have expressed concern, as federal law dictates that only deceased individuals may appear on currency.
'There is proposed legislation': Scott Bessent unveils plan to put Trump's face on a $250 bill
In a statement, the Treasury Department said that the printing office "is conducting appropriate planning and due diligence" in response to the legislation. "Should this legislative mandate be signed into law, the BEP is moving proactively to produce a $250 commemorative note which will appropriately recognize the 250th Anniversary of our great nation."
