ORC = Organic Rankine Cycle
• Principle: Utilizes hot steam or gas with an organic working fluid in a turbine ? mechanical energy drives the locomotive
• Fuel: LNG, methanol, possibly hydrogen
• Efficiency: up to 45% (theoretical, pilots still ongoing)
• Emissions: lower than diesel, depending on fuel
• Maintenance: ORC engines can be simpler, with fewer moving parts than diesel
• Investment cost: higher than a diesel locomotive
• Fuel cost: often lower, especially with methanol or LNG

• Investment cost: lower than ORC locomotive
