NIO builds all of its vehicles around a shared idea: every model is designed to work with the company’s battery-swap system. This creates a consistent ecosystem where sedans, SUVs, and coupes all use the same battery interface, even though the vehicles themselves vary widely in size and purpose.
The sedan lineup includes the ET5, the ET5 Touring, and the larger ET7. These models focus on efficiency and long-range driving, making them strong candidates for the higher-capacity battery packs. The SUV family includes the ES6, ES7, ES8, EC6, and EC7. These offer more space and versatility while still using the same swappable battery architecture. NIO also introduced a more affordable sub-brand called ONVO, which currently includes the L60 and the larger L90. Even though these models target a different price segment, they still follow the same battery-swap philosophy.
Battery Pack Options Across the Lineup
NIO’s battery system is built around a few core pack sizes that fit every vehicle. The most common options are a 75-kilowatt-hour pack and a 100-kilowatt-hour pack. The smaller pack focuses on durability and cost efficiency, making it a practical choice for everyday driving. The 100-kilowatt-hour pack uses a higher-density chemistry that extends range without changing the physical size of the battery.
A major step forward for the company is the 150-kilowatt-hour semi-solid-state battery. This pack offers much higher energy density while keeping the same form factor, allowing for extremely long driving range without redesigning the vehicles. It is compatible with the same swap stations as the other packs, which keeps the entire system unified.
ONVO models use slightly different pack sizes, such as an 85-kilowatt-hour configuration, but they remain fully compatible with the swap network.
How the Battery-Swap System Shapes the Vehicles
Every NIO model is built around the idea that the battery is not a permanent part of the car. Drivers can switch between pack sizes depending on their needs. Someone who mainly drives in the city might use the smaller pack most of the year, then swap to a larger pack for a long trip. This flexibility also reduces long-term ownership concerns because the battery can be replaced in minutes rather than years.
The swap stations automate the entire process. Newer generations of stations can handle more vehicles at once and complete swaps faster, which makes the system more practical as the fleet grows.
How Each Model Fits Into the Ecosystem
The ET5 and ET5 Touring are compact, efficient sedans designed to take full advantage of the battery-swap system.
The ET7 is the flagship sedan and was one of the first models prepared for the 150-kilowatt-hour semi-solid-state pack.
The ES6, ES7, and ES8 cover the mid-size and full-size SUV categories, offering more space while maintaining compatibility with all major battery sizes.
The EC6 and EC7 provide coupe-style SUV options with the same swappable battery architecture.
The ONVO L60 and L90 bring the swap system into a more affordable, family-focused segment while keeping the same core battery philosophy.
Why This System Matters
Because the battery is not tied to the vehicle, the lifespan of the car is not limited by battery degradation. The ability to upgrade or downgrade packs also changes how drivers think about range. Instead of buying a car based on the largest battery they might need once or twice a year, they can choose the pack that fits their daily routine and swap when necessary.
This approach sets NIO apart from most EV manufacturers, who treat the battery as a fixed component. NIO’s system creates a more flexible ownership model and helps stabilize long-term value.
