Computed tomography (CT) has been developed as a nondestructive technique for observing minute internal images in samples. Although CT technology is widely used in medical imaging diagnosis, it has been difficult to obtain photorealistic (clean or clear) CT images due to various unwanted artifacts generated during the CT scanning process, along with the limitations of back-projection algorithms. Recently, advances in quantum computers/annealers have made quantum computing possible, making it possible to overcome these problems.

Quantum CT images calculate a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) model by applying quantum superposition to each pixel and comparing it to the density of the sample. We demonstrate the quantum advantages of quantum CT imaging within 10,800 qubits using the hybrid solver of the D-Wave system. Quantum CT images show clear internal structures, like photographs, and are very less susceptible to various artifacts.

With the advancement of D-Wave systems' hybrid solver, quantum CT technology is expected to bring tremendous advancements in medical imaging diagnosis and medical device automation.
