🇬🇧🇸🇨 How Much Money Scotland Is Losing From Tourism Right Now
Scotland is still operating below its 2019 tourism levels, and that shortfall is costing the country hundreds of millions of pounds each year.

➡️ Scotland is estimated to be losing between ÂŁ500 million and ÂŁ900 million annually in tourism revenue compared to pre-pandemic performance.
This gap comes from:

fewer long-haul visitors (especially from North America and Asia)

higher travel and accommodation costs

reduced business travel

slower recovery in city-based tourism (Edinburgh and Glasgow)

weaker spending per visitor in some regions

Even though Scotland’s natural attractions remain hugely popular, international visitor numbers haven’t fully returned to their old highs.

Why Scotland’s Losses Matter
Tourism is a major pillar of Scotland’s economy — proportionally larger than in many parts of the UK. That means even a moderate drop in visitors has an outsized impact on:

hotels and B&Bs

restaurants and pubs

tour operators

rural communities

cultural sites and festivals

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe alone used to generate over ÂŁ1 billion in economic activity; slower international attendance affects that entire ecosystem. $BKNG
