Repost from Stocktwits board, courtesy of Elegant_Confusion, regarding the following recent article:"2026 AV bill a game changer for heavy trucking," released Thursday, January 08, 2026 (link https://www.freightwaves.com/news/2026-av-bill-a-game-changer-for-heavy-trucking).

"legislatively, the introduction of the Self Drive Act of 2026, with bipartisan support, is a milestone towards autonomous driving. There is a lot to unpack here. This is an editorial from a freight-trucking industry perspective:

The most important thing about having a national act is that it preempts each state from having its own regulation of autonomous driving. Such was once the case with trucking regulation in general.

A careful reading of preliminary drafts of this act show that it has been worded to require multiple forms of perception in autonomous vehicles, putting an end to the prospect of visual “camera only” driving systems. That’s bad news for one electric vehicle manufacturer (let’s not say who!) and good news for the entire LIDAR industry! "

Following is my feedback/comment:

Relevant excerpt from DARFT legislation (Page 12, link https://d1dth6e84htgma.cloudfront.net/03_H_R_SELF_DRIVE_Act_c6810113bc.pdf), regarding your last point on requiring multiple sensors (see item (iii) below, refers to "suite of sensors of the ADS"):

REQUIREMENTS FOR SAFETY CASE.—A
safety case shall provide claims, supported by arguments and evidence, that supports the conclusion of
the manufacturer that the design, construction, and
performance of the automated driving system or
ADS-equipped vehicle meets the needs for motor vehicle safety, including the following:
‘‘(A) A description of each hardware and
software element of the ADS that includes the
following:
‘‘(i) Braking, steering, propulsion, and
computing capability.
‘‘(ii) Redundancies.
‘‘(iii) Each capability of the suite of
sensors of the ADS
.
‘‘(iv) The integration of the ADS into
the vehicle platform.
