My understanding is settlement can cover Past Conduct, but not future.  Settlements can release the defendant from all claims (known or unknown) related to the alleged past actions specified in the lawsuit. They generally do not cover future wrongdoing or liabilities that arise from new, separate actions after the settlement date.
