Naturally we need to remember that most rich people weren't nearly as many rich people are today.

An even bigger difference was that his father--who had many bad as well as good qualities--impressed upon all of his children from an early age that they were very privileged, and needed to live their lives in ways that would pay back their good fortune.

Amazingly enough, they all did that.
