jsc52033, Wrong with your "Nuclear and gas are less polluting and more cost effective France is one of several countries moving in that direction" and sigh, no link in support of your assertion either, so your post is gone. And, umm, so you are a climate science denier too. No surprise.

The statement is partially true, but inaccurate: France is not moving from renewables to nuclear and gas; it has long relied on nuclear power and plans to expand it, while also increasing its renewable energy output to meet net-zero targets. France is also a net exporter of electricity, a position it maintains by leveraging its nuclear base, but it is not increasing its reliance on natural gas.

France's Energy Mix

Nuclear Dominance:
Approximately 70% of France's electricity comes from nuclear power, a strategic choice rooted in its limited indigenous energy resources.

Investment in Renewables:

France has a legally binding obligation to increase its share of renewable energy and is actively promoting the deployment of wind and solar power, though growth has been slower than other regions.

Net-Zero Goals:
The country has set a target for carbon neutrality by 2050 and aims to increase renewable energy in its final energy consumption to 41.3% by 2030, a goal the European Commission encouraged it to make more ambitious.

Building New Nuclear:
In 2022, France announced plans to build six new nuclear reactors and to consider more, which will be key to achieving its climate goals and securing energy independence.

No Gas Pivot:
While natural gas is part of France's energy mix, there's no indication it is shifting from renewables to gas; instead, it leverages nuclear and is growing renewables.

Why the Mix of Nuclear and Renewables?

Energy Security:
The long-term goal is to reach carbon neutrality by using both nuclear and renewables, creating a flexible system that is both reliable and low-carbon.

Economic Advantage:
France exports electricity to other European countries, generating significant revenue from its nuclear power, making it a global leader in electricity export.
