I wouldn't have thought anyone has believed much of what is said in commercials for yonks.

Incredible as it may seem, I think you're wrong. Commercials are expensive to make, and expensive to air, at least in prime time. So we wouldn't be seeing them if they didn't make people buy the products they're hawking.

And really good commercials are hard to make: you have to tell a whole story in 30 seconds. Or at most, a minute. That said, artistic commercials don't always work. Sometimes people like them, and they win awards, but don't sell product. I have no idea why.
