My response is based on being an amateur numismatist and artifact restorer and being in a handful of collector clubs for years through my metal detecting. Soft scrub works fine, just not on jewelry or coin collections or antique artifacts that have polished finishes that shine. I'd get kicked out of clubs if they found me using SS on reals and other silver coins.
Yes, you're correct about patina on certain items. One finds that on brass and copper as well. If it's a valuable old collector item, you don't even clean it.
I cringe when I watch detector vids that people pick up an old coin from in the ground and use their fingers to try and wipe the dirt off the coin to see it. They just dropped the value instantly. Rubbing dry dirt on metal.
