And of course Pompeii and Herculaneum were destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. (Most of the people who lived in the area seem to have had the sense to leave in advance. Some who, for one reason or other, stayed behind, did die, but the death toll was't even close to the population of the area.

My point, though is simply that for several years before the eruption, there'd been a number of earthquakes in the vicinity. Not the kind that killed people; they just did some damage that residents routinely repaired. But in retrospect, probably they were a sign...
