I remember watching Marty Zweig on that weekly tv show with Louis Rukeyser.  And for I remember his famous dictum about following the direction of interest rates and the Fed. 
The one caveat is that if the market senses that the interest rate cuts are larger and more sudden because of the fear of a recession the market will take a bit of a hit first before eventually recovering.
