Your guess is very close:

We decided to go to Marseille after Paris trip. European big cities may all have rock castles, museums, churches, rivers where visitors could take cruise, and tall buildings where visitors could climb, have lunch and see the whole city. We had seen plenty of these in London and Paris, and some of them were old and depressing. For example, I personally did not like to see another castle of ancient kings, as kings might mean dictators, robbers and blood. We did not want to go to another famous European big city such as Rome and Berlin to see similar things. Big cities also meant crowd, traffic jam and big line up. Every day we spent 2-3 hours on transportation such as bus, subway, train, tram and uber in London and Paris, and they were slow and not comfortable most of time. We spent possibly another hour a day in line up for museums, castles and churches, and it was not comfortable. Most important, we all wanted to swim on the sea beaches, played and enjoyed by ourself, instead of checked out the glory of another king.

Marseille is actually the second largest city of France. France’s national song includes Marseille as its name. It has even longer history than Rome. It still has great castles, museums and churches, but they are not crowdy, has no big line up, and even free to visit and climb. Most importantly, they are within walking distance, and saved us lots of time and headache.

Every morning, we visited museums, food markets and historical sites. Every afternoon, we swam on the beach. Catalonia Beach is a small fine sand beach, which is typical of the Mediterranean region. It was only a 20-minute walk from where we lived. Prado Beach is the largest beach in Marseille, about 5 kilometers from the city center of Marseille, and it takes about 20 minutes by bus to get there. Plage de la Pointé Rouge is about 6 kilometers away, and we can go there by bus or boat. We chose to go there by boat, and felt so cool. There are several beaches on Frioul Island, and a boat took us there in about 20 minutes. Plage de la Grande Mer is a beach located in the Mediterranean fishing port of Cassis, about 35 kilometers from Marseille. In the evening, we attended street concerts. The street concert on Sunday was really great. I didn't understand French, but I guessed the main performer was very famous. He was very good at telling the rich history of Marseille with his speeches and songs. He made the audience to sing along with him from time to time.

Marseille is certainly a good place to spend a short holiday. All beaches are not only free, but also provide free services to take care of our personal bags. But I definitely don't want to live here. Most houses and the roads are very old. Restaurants serve customers on the outdoor street, and flies are everywhere. Many streets are on steep roads, and driving there is not fun. It's too hot under the bright sunshine in summer.

Guess what is the best place to live in our opinion after this 4 weeks long European journey?
