CAMPO BRASIL: Strategic storage of natural gas in Tamaulipas.
#FindOut | We have been in discussions for over a decade about the economic viability of #CampoBrasil for strategic underground storage of natural gas. This field, ruled economically unviable for hydrocarbon extraction, is located in a sandstone formation; it currently has 58 wells drilled. The type of hydrocarbon produced in this field was gas and condensates, reaching its peak production in 1966.
Within the framework of a public policy that prioritizes energy self-sufficiency and security, as well as energy sovereignty and national security, it is necessary to rethink strategic dependence and our lack of strategic storage capacity for gas, as well as other resources that could severely harm our nation due to a lack of supply and reserves. Gas is more expensive than gas that doesn't exist.
Like this field, there are several others in Mexico with the capacity to provide the strategic storage we need; the costs in the absence of supply make the development of this field viable. Simply to give you some data, it is estimated that there are around 400 active underground natural gas storage facilities in the United States. Of these, approximately 79% are depleted oil or natural gas fields. We have no facilities in Mexico.
From the Government of Tamaulipas, we promote a debate that will allow us to clarify the alignment of this storage project with current public policy; develop the elements that will allow us to establish a firm project and submit it for consideration by the entities that facilitate its development.
