Mitch McConnell and Sheldon Whitehouse who both supported the resolution were absent from the vote, meaning it likely would pass if reintroduced at a later date. To counter this, Senate Majority Leader John Thune rammed through a procedural motion to permanently table the resolution, which passed 50-49 with Vice President J.D. Vance entering the chamber to cast a tie-breaking vote.

"Leader Thune and Senate Republicans tonight voted to keep the Trump tariff-tax in place. They own the Trump tariffs and higher costs on America's middle-class families," Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement.
