My thought is China doesn't want to back down because they have long been trying to maintain an image of being coequal to the US.
Trump on the other hand has insisted this is happening Wednesday, and he's been pretty consistent lately about doing what he says.
It feels like a game of chicken where both sides see the negatives of backing down as worse than pulling away.
I hope this is all delayed at least until cooler heads prevail. 100% tariffs and whatever the chinese response is would be great for that dumb little trade, but terrible in every other way.
