I don't know anyone who holds higher education against someone, I fact I think most all respect people with PHDs and the like.

You'd be wrong. Consider the nicknames. There are old ones and new ones: egghead, nerd, bookworm, bluestocking, swot, overachiever and more. In many other countries, people with advanced degrees are respected. Teachers are respected, and, at least in Asia and Germany, elementary and secondary teachers are much better paid than they are here. That is a good measure of perceived value.
