Elie Mystal is absolutely right:
If anything, thinking that we are better than Trump, thinking there is some “silent majority” who opposes the unserious grotesqueries of the man, is the core conceit that has led the Democratic Party to such total ruin.
We're also unrealistic. Back in 2016, most Dems were sure Hillary would win. Yes, some people hadn't liked her for decades; they said she was "polarizing". But we didn't want to think about that. What we DID want to think about was the brilliant future that lay ahead. Surely we'd see gains in both houses of Congress! Why, the presidential victory might usher in a decade or more of Democratic dominance across the board.
But that did not happen. And this year, we were saying some of the same things. We need to get over the optimism. It doesn't work.
