ArcelorMittal receives electrolysers for green hydrogen-based steelmaking in Germany after nearly a year of delay
Supplier Plug Power had previously said it would deliver the machines by the end of 2023

Electrolyser supplier Plug Power has delivered two 5MW units to a green hydrogen project in Germany, which will supply H2 for use in ArcelorMittal’s steelworks and local mobility.
However, Plug Power had announced back in May 2023 that it would deliver the order to the HyBit consortium — which also includes utility EWE and its subsidiary SWB — by the end of that year, suggesting around ten months of delay.

The green hydrogen plant itself, which is set to cost €20m ($21.83m) in total, had been scheduled to begin operations in mid-2024.

ArcelorMittal had last year suggested that H2 from the facility — sited at SWB’s Mittelsbüren power plant on the outskirts of the city of Bremen — could be used in multiple stages of steelmaking.
In addition to displacing natural gas or coal for industrial heat to process steel, hydrogen can be used to directly reduce iron ore into sponge iron, which can then be run through electric arc furnaces to produce steel.

In February this year, the European Commission had approved €1.3bn in state aid for ArcelorMittal to install a direct iron reduction plant, as well as electric arc furnaces, at its steelworks in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt.

The steel company had also been allocated €250m in total for its decarbonisation initiative from the Bremen state government, with €10m for the 10MW electrolyser capacity delivered this month.

However, ArcelorMittal has been open about its intention to use fossil gas for direct iron reduction until renewable hydrogen becomes affordable, with a target price of €2/kg.

Hydrogen Insight has reached out to Plug Power for comment on the delay.
