I'm trying now at least. I really like my current job and believe I have a purpose other than just surviving. I really enjoy teaching young apprentices at my always home in the carpenters union too.. I see a lot of those kids in myself when I was that age too. Always being a smart ass and think they know everything when they could be paying attention..and learning.
I love it. I like to show them how not paying attention in school is not even close to any math test they ever took. It has real life consequence and it could very well be your immediate family that pays the price for your asshattery.
They get the hint after awhile. Especially when I explain to them that they could work at Home Depot for 10 bucks an hour for the rest of their life and be a jerk, or they could make 60 bucks an hour and be a responsible adult with health insurance that takes care of their whole family. Possibly a little pension and an annuity too if they play their cards right.. They just need to understand the extent of their situation and how it affects everyone, even people they don't know.
Life and death situations are always on my hotplate regardless of how I think about myself.
I'm pretty impressed with my zoo crew too. They are so eager to bust their butts for our common goals and are thirsty for knowledge. LOL some of their questions, I cannot even answer without running it up the flagpole. We are going to lose some or most of them eventually to real good paying union jobs but I'm proud to see that. They are dedicated to our workplace and if not they are gone. I don't need the same patience I try to practice with the kids at the training center.
I'll do it as long as I can because our future means a hell of a lot more to me than my personal past.
I started out just building shit and never respected the full consequences if I happened to fuck up.. nowadays I'm in charge of the safety and security of what I consider to be everyone else but me and I take it seriously.
