Anyone who’s ever been in the infantry is familiar with this sound. It is variable depending on the type of weapon used, and the velocity of the bullet at the time it passes overhead.
In the army, recruits go through the “obstacle course” (At least, I assume they still do) where you crawl under barbed wire while they shoot machine guns overhead. (Quite a ways overhead, actually)
The individual rounds make a distinct “cracking” sound. Likewise experienced by the old “target pits” where you “pull” bullseye targets for shooters back at the firing line. (Easily seen in the early scenes of the film “Sergeant York”.)
