The original rig was a drilling rig, not a completion rig. Some of the work could have been done with the drilling rig, but at much higher cost. The drilling rig cost $12,500 per day, whereas the completion rig only cost $4,000 per day. For this type of work, the completion rig is also much faster than the drilling rig. It really was a matter of economics more than anything else. To do the completion work with a drilling rig would be much much more expensive. No one in this business does completion work with a drilling rig. On the other hand, drill outs and some drilling is commonly done with completion rigs in combination with reverse units and power swivels. Here again economics is at play.
