I think better examples would be North and South Korea or the USA where the same "people" split themselves (into civil wars).
Non sectarian for the most part until the larger party made a power play.

No, Ukrainians are not Russians but like many countries made it work
Until it didn't like Czechoslovakia..
Yugoslavia wouldn't be an example - too ethnically diverse.
