Maybe it is because the blue states are wealthier because their inhabitants are smarter. Look at the industries in those blue states and the vast majority are not dependent on natural resources but brains. In the states that are dependent on natural resources the wealth is concentrated on far fewer individuals who control the idiot inhabitants
