How is it a trick question?
If it returns to trips, then clearly the story he loves and believes in so deeply, the one he must defend from the filthy, lying bashers, is bogus. If and when the story does prove bogus, he'll have to repent and apologize to those he claimed were wrong, accepting that he was, in fact, wrong.
I'm sure he'll do it when that time comes. I'm so sure of it.
