cloud computing/off loading network and security functions from host cpu
"Microsoft and Broadcom have a partnership that involves both hardware and software solutions for various markets and applications. Some examples of their collaboration are:
HD DVD players: Microsoft and Broadcom delivered a combined hardware and software platform for more cost-efficient HD DVD players1. The new platform uses Microsoft® Windows® CE 6.0 and Broadcom’s BCM7440 system-on-chip solution, allowing consumer electronics manufacturers, original design manufacturers and systems integrators to more easily and affordably deliver HD DVD playback1.
Cloud computing: Microsoft and Broadcom worked together to enable Azure cloud services on Broadcom’s Stingray SmartNICs2. The SmartNICs are based on Broadcom’s BCM58800 NetXtreme E-Series Ethernet controller and support Microsoft’s Project Zipline compression and encryption algorithms. The SmartNICs can offload network and security functions from the host CPU, improving performance and efficiency for cloud workloads2.
AI and data center: Microsoft and Broadcom are members of the AI and Data Center Development Platform (AIDP), a consortium of industry leaders that aims to accelerate the development and deployment of AI and data center solutions. The AIDP provides a common hardware and software platform for AI and data center developers, based on the OCP Accelerator Module (OAM) specification. The OAM is a standard form factor for AI accelerators that can be plugged into a variety of servers and systems."
