The point you make about the Egyptians not being Jewish is certainly valid.

As to how crucial Israel is to our defense, I imagine it is significant in some chess piece way that isn't always readily apparent to everyone. Which is probably amplified by oil in the neighborhood.

Too many moving parts to dissect on a chat board, I guess. Taking religion out of the equation seems a reach to me, though.
