Québec is also providing nearly $127,000 in aid to Sayona for research related to the battery sector.
The announcement was confirmed Friday by Abitibi-Ouest MNA Suzanne Blais on behalf of Natural Resources and Forestry Minister Maïté Blanchette Vézina. The funding comes from the Research and Innovation Support Program, and the work is being carried out in collaboration with COREM, a not-for-profit centre of expertise and innovation.
Sayona will conduct laboratory tests with its abitibian ore to optimize a new production process for high-purity lithium hydroxide for electric vehicles.
The process developed by Integrated Carbon Sequestration replaces sulfuric acid with nitric acid, reducing costs and waste generation. The chemicals used are also recycled.
The research project is valued at $317,000. It is in addition to the other work carried out since 2021.

The company Sayona Québec wants to launch an experimental project that could make it possible to transform its lithium concentrate in a better respect for the environment.
The company, which hopes to operate its Authier project in La Motte, has signed an agreement with Integrated Carbon Sequestration (ICS). This Australian company has developed a process using nitric acid rather than sulfuric acid in the production of lithium hydroxide and carbonate, used for the production of batteries for electric vehicles.
This process recycles 90% of production waste, explains Guy Laliberté, CEO of Sayona Québec. It seems promising to us and we feel important to verify this technology here in Canada, with the standards in force and the ore of our projects.
According to the plan developed by Sayona, the experimental project would begin at the Centre d'expertise et d'innovation dans le domaine du traitement des minéraux (COREM) facilities, with the spodumene concentrate of the Authier project. If this first phase proves successful, the project then provides for the construction of two pilot plants, all within 24 months
