TIRANA, April 11/ATSH-Maela Marini/ The US Ambassador in Tirana, Yuri Kim, estimated today that the creation of the Albanian Energy Exchange means economic integration in Europe.
During the ceremony held for the launch of the operation of the Albanian Energy Exchange, Kim said that, "this is important because we are at an important moment in the strategic development of Albania and its place in Europe".
"This is about creating an opportunity for Albania, Kosovo and the region to have stability in the supply of energy, but also with its price. So it has to do with stability and security. It is also about investments as well as ensuring that companies from all over the world see Albania as a place to invest in," she said.
The ambassador emphasized that it is also about integration.
"While Albania integrates its market with Kosovo, we also see this as a basis for integration within the Western Balkans and for the Western Balkans to integrate within Europe. That is why this project is so important. It means a more efficient price of electricity and efficient use, transparent and reliable data of investors in the energy sector, including renewable energy developers, who are looking for opportunities to sell on the open market", she said.
But the most important thing, according to the ambassador, is that "it means economic integration in Europe".
"Albania will have more opportunities to join the electricity markets of neighboring countries and to attract more foreign investments. The US has been very proud to support ALPEX and USAID has been there every step of the way from helping to establish the Energy Exchange to training ALPEX staff. When we work together we can achieve great things," she said.
The ambassador emphasized that, "we want Albania to look at our partner, to increase its capacity in the field of energy, strengthening the investment climate and supporting closer ties with the EU".
"This market union will further integrate Albania with the pan-European energy market, laying the foundations for increasing investments in clean energy and improving energy security. The USA through USAID is working with Albania and Kosovo to transform the internal energy markets for competitive and transparent exchanges with other European markets. This will help the citizens and there will be more energy supply and at better prices. Connecting the Albania-Kosovo market will help both countries join a European electricity market, improving electricity trading across the continent," Ambassador Kim added.
