Hydrogen trucks and refueling stations: the Clean Hydrogen Partnership funds 30 million for H2Accelerate consortium projects

Marzo 14, 2023 : https://hydronews.it/camion-a-idrogeno-e-refueling-station-la-clean-hydrogen-partnership-finanzia-con-30-milioni-i-progetti-del-consorzio-h2accelerate/?fbclid=IwAR3N-v6kLXB5WmvJQo5JLEdb21I1QBGD8iuHnNuBiBqPXKyG5tTFbDU3MHQ

Two of the major projects promoted by the H2Accelerate alliance, namely the installation of 8 Hydrogen Refueling Stations on the roads of the Old Continent and the commissioning of a fleet of 150 trucks with fuel cell propulsion (referred to as the Inaugural Station Deployment - ISD and TRUCKS Project, respectively), will be able to be realized thanks to the 30 million euros in funding granted by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.

This was announced by H2Accelerate itself, a consortium formed in late 2020 by European truck manufacturers Daimler Truck, Volvo Group, and Iveco Group, Finnish research organization VTT, the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the Romanian National Union of Road Transporters (UNTRR) by the Federazione Italiana Autotrasportatori Professionali (FIAP), the Austrian association WKÖ, and Element Energy France (ERM Group), with support from the Norwegian institute SINTEF, which will coordinate the two projects, and energy majors Shell, TotalEnergies, and Everfuel.

"We are happy to be able to support the H2Accelerate projects, which will contribute to the deployment of hydrogen for the decarbonization of heavy transport in Europe," commented Bart Biebuyck, Executive Director of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. "We hope that the project's 150 planned hydrogen trucks will be able to rely on a growing network of refueling stations, which will complement the first eight built by the alliance partners."

The project's 150 planned hydrogen trucks-vehicles with a capacity of 44 tons and a range of at least 600 kilometers-are expected to enter service within 2 years, and their use will enable the 3 alliance partner manufacturers to test and further develop technologies that will then be commercialized in the second half of the decade.

The 8 refueling stations to be built as part of the Inaugural Station Deployment (ISD) will have a capacity of more than 1 ton per day each, greater than any public Hydrogen Refueling Station currently in operation in Europe, and will be located along TEN-T network corridors. In a second phase, H2Accelerate members expect to then be able to install an increasing number of plants along the road transport axis between Scandinavia and northern Italy.

"Our company has always tried to anticipate trends and in fact we were among the first to start experimenting with alternative propulsion systems for trucks more than two decades ago," recalled Giandomenico Fioretti, Head of Alternative Propulsion Business Development at IVECO Truck Business Unit. "Today, the hydrogen carrier represents a great opportunity to decarbonize heavy transport because it offers the best 'trade-off' between range, payload and recharging times. We are therefore happy to be able to work together with our partners on the development of the H2Accelerate projects, thanks to the support of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership."
