that was a great shot....

This confidence once attracted young voters (such as me, back in the late 1970s) to the party. The country then seemed to be falling apart—faced with riots, political assassinations, bombings overseas and at home. My colleague David Frum has called the ’70s .. https://www.amazon.com/How-We-Got-Here-Brought/dp/0465041965 .. “strange, feverish years,” a time of “unease and despair, punctuated by disaster.” The liberal Columbia University professor Mark Lilla would later write .. https://www.amazon.com/Once-Future-Liberal-Identity-Politics/dp/0062697439 .. about how difficult it is “to convey to anyone who wasn’t alive and politically aware at the time what a dreary place America seemed in the late 1970s, how lacking in direction and confidence.”

I was born in 1970 and I appeared to be fairly immune to all the conservative views back then. I was a thriving 8 or nine year old young guy who got into my own share of stuff that other people called bad, but we ate regular meals and even though it wasn't filet mignon and lobster, it tasted really good and we earned it whenever we were able to treat ourselves. I thought ramen noodles with carrots were a delicacy and rich kids who never ate that shit agreed with me too. LOL I still make my noodles with carrots and sometimes throw a shrimp or two in there or some real chicken bits.

Tom was military at the same time my father was. It's hard to decompress from that. My pop helped me and the other neighborhood kids out a ton, but he treated my mom like shit and that eventually blew back on me too. He only wanted to pick "winners" for his team and I was always recruiting the underdogs. There was no negotiation. Don't get me wrong, he deserved it. He was a war vet who had two purple hearts, a silver star and was a tunnel rat in the 25th infantry. I still keep his "electric strawberry" patches in a close spot when II try to channel the fear and anger he must have felt.

I knew a few dudes who went to the desert in my time, but I'm just going to stop it right here. I'm messed up enough without bringing others in. The bottom line is that we all have our own shortcomings. If we can't accept that and choose to blame everyone else for them then we cannot ever evolve as a species.

Do you think the first neanderthals went home and cried in the cave that some other dude hit him with a stick? Fuck no, he didn't get hit with a stick in the first place if he didn't act like an asshole and supported common decency. Otherwise two assholes probably fought each other to death with sticks, but here we are. big smile
