David Rishel - US, NATO and US-Allied military planningDec 5 What is more likely to happen first, Russia running out of equipment or the West getting tired of helping Ukraine?
Many people asking this question (on the Russian side anyway), fail to see a key reality that the West has completely embraced; Ukraine is fighting Russia for us, and this is the least expensive and lowest possible risk we could dream of in a conflict with Russia.
You see, we in the west have spent years developing weapons to protect our countries from an enemy attacking Europe. We watched Russia rearm and we’re wondering what Putin was planning.
We developed all these cool weapons, but many of them were largely untested in a large scale operation and we were not sure how they would work. Now we know what works and what doesn’t, and we know how to make these weapons better. Thanks Putin!
Also, since the Clinton Administration, the US has been nagging the rest of NATO to take defense seriously. The UK has, and the French have sort of (mostly for selfish reasons relating to their ability to project power in their African sphere) but the rest of NATO ignored us. Europe had collectively deluded itself into believing that Europe faced no threat, so military spending was simply not going to happen. Russia has completely changed that. Europe has been shocked to the core by the reality that the world remains a dangerous place and that they need to be actually ready to defend themselves. Thanks Putin!
Finally, as Europe has woken up to reality and we’re learning how to best use all of our fancy weapons systems, we’ve also realized that since Crimea, the US and a few other NATO countries have helped to develop a professional and capable military organization in Ukraine. This military is capable, flexible, and determined to fight as long as it takes to protect their country. What this means is that Europe has been gifted with a people willing to fight a war against Russia, and all it is costing us is providing them with equipment and support. They are willing to do the work. They are willing to die on the battlefield. All we need to do is keep the flow of weapons going to Ukraine. Perhaps never in modern history has the West found itself with an entire nation willing to fight our enemy for us, at such a low cost. We know this and we will feed Ukraine with whatever it needs for as long as they want to fight, because we could never find a cheaper or easier way to bleed Russia dry.
Russia has handed NATO the easiest, least expensive and lowest possible risk way of destroying the Russian military when they invaded Ukraine. The west will support and pay for this for as many years as Ukraine is willing to fight.
