What we know is the short interest in this stock was less than 3% of the O/S. That's fact, straight from the only place you can get accurate short interest data, FINRA. I've seen all sorts of "speculation" (ie - fluffy pumper fairy tales) of it being higher, but they never show any sort of proof.
We also know that trades after 12/8 weren't going to get the stock from NB, so those proposed "buyers" who were being fed a relentless stream of misinformation were going to wind up losing what they paid for the stock just a couple days later. That's why FINRA acted despite the pump and dump con artists trying to distract their marks onto a different scapegoat.
