Fight inflation! I receive an email reminder from the NYT informing me that my digital subscription would increase from the reasonable rate of $8/mo to $17/mo.

We wanted to let you know that on November 7, 2022, your current subscription rate will come to an end. Your new rate will be $17.00, billed every four weeks, an increase of $9.00 over your current rate.

Oh no you don't I thought to myself. I called and indicated that the new rate was not acceptable and that I would need to cancel, after first asking if I could continue at either $8 OR take advantage of the new subscriber rate of $4/mo.

No to both. She was not authorized to cancel, so she transferred me to 'subscription retention'. I'd gone through that drill over the years to lock in the promotional $8/mo, for years.

I repeated my concerns to SR and she asked if I would continue if she offered the $4/mo rate for one year.

Absolutely, I responded. So, not $17/mo, not $8/mo, but half of that.
