brooklyn13, Look at the title again - Conservative, rebellious, culture-defining: A brief history of the headscarf

It's a brief history - is it not? Starts with a beautiful African woman. As lovely a fashion statement as one could see. Says it has had a complicated life. And that it "has been favored by revolutionaries and royalty alike. It can be either conservative or rebellious. Beyond its utilitarian origins as a source of protection from the elements, the headscarf remains at the center of contentious debate about women's rights, identity, power and class."

It deals with it's birth. And when head coverings were first written into law. And it covers your Paul mention with it's Corinthian quote.

It mentions it has been and continues to be a "tool for resistance." And as a means of repression. And it gives examples of both.

And it goes on with more interesting history including the Suffragettes, factory workers and fashion.

"An exhaustive review of the headscarf in history. I think the discussion, as much as I could follow, falls apart, though, when it lumps together women wearing headscarfs as a fashion accessory with those who are mandated to wear them.
P - No woman was ever arrested by the fashion police, and later murdered, for wearing a headscarf unfashionably or incorrectly.
"

Since we are talking of head coverings we are talking in a sense of fashion. In a sense the morality police of the Taliban, of Iran and other places can be seen as fashion police.

It finishes with

"Headscarves have remained a staple because of their versatility and cultural longevity. When women cover their hair, they are continuing a centuries-long tradition with a polarizing history of strife, style and sensation.
P - "Hair wrapping has stood the test of time for a reason, because it works," said Maria Sotiriou, the founder of UK brand Silke London. "To call it a resurgence would be to say it was lost at some point -- instead I think there is now, more than ever, a sharing of knowledge between cultures."

i think the article lives up to it's title.

It was Plato who said, “He, O men, is the wisest, who like Socrates, knows that his wisdom is in truth worth nothing”
